Here are some quick hints about how to buy a domain name:
Easy to say: Get a domain name that is easy to say, and easy to spell.
Not everyone understands dashes: Avoid dashes, since they make it more difficult to tell someone the domain name. The person might think you meant an underscore character, (_), or even might spell out the word dash. None of these mistakes will help them get to your website.
Alternate spellings: Register some alternate spellings of your domain name, even maybe some common misspellings, and point them at your main web hosting account.
Ease of advertising: If your domain name will be mentioned in advertising, consider a .COM domain name. If you are mainly depending on search engine traffic, and on the web links, try one of the other extensions.
Checking on the .COM version of your website name: If you chose a .NET, .ORG, or .US, domain name, check the .COM version of your domain name. If the .COM version of your domain name has a website confusingly similar to what you want to do on yours, you might want to get some legal advice first. But if the .COM version is just on a parked domain, you might want to see if the owner of the .COM domain will sell it to you. Typical price can be $100 - $300, or more if the domain name is really short, or is a single word. Otherwise, go ahead and register your name with a different extension, you could wait for the future to buy the .COM name. However, if your website becomes really popular, the owner of the .COM name might want more money!
Are you registering a trademark? Visit the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and do a trademark search for the words in your domain name. If someone else has already trademarked that name, and is using the trademark for a similar purpose to what you want to do on your website, you could have problems in the future. Again, advice from an attorney who is a specialist in intellectual property law, and specifically internet law, can be helpful. I would suggest a call to Ira Rothken, at Tech Firm. He's an attorney who specializes in internet issues.
There is really a lot more I could say about buying domain names, but these are probably the most important things to think about. Oh yeah, one last piece of advice:
Be bold! Don't be afraid to register a new domain! It's inexpensive, and fun too! If you get a great idea for a name, come to http://www.gogarnet.com to check it out to see if it is available. If your cool idea for a new name is available, just go ahead and register it, it doesn't cost very much. You can then either build a site for it, or just keep the domain, and wait for someone to buy it from you. I can also help you to easily put some interesting information on your domain name so it isn't just doing nothing. You could even pick up a little pocket change in commissions from curious people visiting your website, and then clicking off to Amazon to buy books, or visiting Google ads related to your website.
Welcome to the fun world of owning a domain name, I hope you'll take the plunge and buy your first domain name today!
